The pianist from Ruse Nikolay Dimitrov will have an extremely exciting summer. The 22-year-old musician is once again part of the EU Youth Orchestra for its summer tour, which will include interesting projects.
The orchestra is already rehearsing in Austria, where they will be performing for the first time. On July 26, at various locations in Vienna, musicians will join in the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the birth of the great Viennese modernist Arnold Schoenberg. There will be five programs, and in one of them Nikolay Dimitrov has been chosen to give a solo recital. He will present six fugues by Bach and six pieces by Schoenberg.
The concert program of the EU Youth Orchestra will be conducted by Ivan Fischer, who is the new music director of the formation. It includes Masquerade by British composer Anna Klein, Variations on a Nursery Rhyme for piano and orchestra by Hungarian composer Ernst von Dohnany, featuring British pianist Isata Cane-Mason as soloist, and Symphony No. 1 in D Major by Gustav Mahler.
The first symphonic concert of the orchestra will take place on August 3 at the festival in Grafenegg /Austria/, after which the ensemble will travel to New York. The most interesting part of the tour will be there – the participation in the festival project WOW /World Orchestra Week – b.a./ at Carnegie Hall. In the great hall of Carnegie Hall, seven youth orchestras from different continents will meet: the EU Youth Orchestra, the National Children’s Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela, the African United Youth Orchestra, the Beijing Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Afghan Youth Orchestra, the National Youth Orchestra of the USA and the NYO2 Youth Orchestra. The concert of the EU Youth Orchestra in the “Carnegie Hall” will be on the evening of August 6, and a day earlier – on August 5, musicians from all bands will have a unique experience. All over 700 orchestra players will participate in a large-scale “play-in” event at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York. World-renowned conductor Gustavo Dudamel will lead the program, in which Nikolay Dimitrov will perform two of the works – “Olympic Fanfare and Theme” by John Williams, written for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, and Final Dance “Malambo” from the ballet ” Estancia’ by Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera.
The last concert of the program, in which Nikolay Dimitrov participates, will be on August 10 in the Italian city of Bolzano at the Bolzano-Bozen festival.

The pianist Nikolay Dimitrov represents Bulgaria in the Youth Orchestra of the European Union, where he is the only Bulgarian among all 110 musicians. He was chosen to participate in after a tough pre-selection and is already preparing in Austria with his colleagues for the orchestra’s European summer tour, starting on July 29.

The interesting experience that Nikolay Dimitrov will gather with the best young performers from all EU countries is related to both piano and organ playing. He will make his debut as an organist for the first time, and this will happen in the work of Richard Strauss ” Also sprach Zarathustra”. Additionally, there will be two chamber music concerts where he will partner with six different violinists in the work of the French composer Pauline García-Viardot “6 morceaux for violin and piano”.

Most exciting, however, is the main programme, where the orchestra works under the batton of one of the biggest names – Sir Antonio Pappano. Recognized for his charismatic leadership and inspiring performances in both symphonic and operatic repertoire, Sir Antonio Pappano has been Music Director of the Royal Opera House „Covent Garden“-London since 2002, and Music Director of the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome since 2005. In 2023, he was appointed Principal Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra, taking over the duties from 2024.

The four concerts in which Nikolay Dimitrov will participate together with the orchestra will take place in Austria, the Netherlands, Germany and Italy. The program includes Beethoven’s Concerto for violin and orchestra in D major, where the famous German violinist Julia Fischer will be the soloist, and “Also sprach Zarathustra” by Strauss. The first concert is on July 29 as a part of the Grafenegg Music Festival. Before the main event, there will also be a chamber music concert with the participation of Nikolay Dimitrov.

The second concert is on August 2 at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the third – on August 3 at the Rheingau Festival in Wiesbaden. The last concert of this program will take place on August 6 in Bolzano as part of the Bolzano Festival Bozen festival. On August 7, the second program of chamber music will be presented again in Bolzano, in which the pianist will play.

The pianist Nikolay Dimitrov shared a musical journey with the audience, taking through different images in his graduation concert entitled “Miroirs”. In front of a full house at the Prince Claus Conservatory in Groningen, the Netherlands, he presented a program of various composers conceptually selected by the performer.

The piano cycle “Miroirs” by Ravel, Sonata No. 3 op.28 in A minor by Prokofiev, three sonatas by Scarlatti – Sonatas K.107, K.380, K.519 and Piano Trio op.24 in A minor: I. Prelude and Aria and II. Toccata by Mechislav Weinberg with the participation of Tsveta Boneva /violin/ and Emma Zarzuela Castro /cello/ were performed on stage.

“The core concept of this event is Miroirs, titled exactly as the first piece
on the programme by Maurice Ravel, and the idea behind it is that any piece we
are performing as musicians serves as a reflection of ourselves because in
order to do that, a man has to look deeply and introspectively inside themselves,
precisely as in a mirror. Then the images and reflections they see in it,
appear on the surface and these images cannot be manipulated or hidden – the
mirror shows all. And the more and more a man looks inside, the more details
and layers they find”, said Nikolay Dimitrov.

Members of the student association “Bulgarian Society Groningen” (Bulgarian Society Groningen), which is the first Bulgarian student organization in the Netherlands, came especially for the concert of the native of Ruse. Among them were three of the founders – Lazar Popov (president of the association), Konstantin Sonev and Sava Popov.

Nikolay Dimitrov shares with the audience a musical journey throughout different images in his graduation concert, titled „Miroirs“. The pianist will play on June 13 at 19:30 in AE Hall, Prince Claus Conservatory.

Programme:

M. Ravel (1875-1937) – Miroirs I. Noctuelles II. Oiseaux tristes III. Une barque sur l’océan IV. Alborada del gracioso V. La vallée des cloches

S. Prokofiev (1891-1953) – Sonata no.3 op.28 in A minor

D. Scarlatti (1685-1757) – Sonatas K.107, K.380, K.519

M. Weinberg (1919-1996) – Piano Trio op.24 in A minor I. Praeludium and Aria II. Toccata with the participation of Tsveta Boneva and Emma Zarzuela Castro.

Free entrance.

Nikolay Dimitrov:

Dear all, welcome to my graduation concert! I am rather happy to see all of you here and share together a musical journey throughout different images. The core concept of this event is Miroirs, titled exactly as the first piece on the programme by Maurice Ravel, and the idea behind it is that any piece we are performing as musicians serves as a reflection of ourselves because in order to do that, a man has to look deeply and introspectively inside themselves, precisely as in a mirror. Then the images and reflections they see in it, appear on the surface and these images cannot be manipulated or hidden – the mirror shows all. And the more and more a man looks inside, the more details and layers they find.

The pieces I have selected are 4 different reflections of myself. Ravel’s Miroirs show my love towards fantasy, colours and dreams, Prokofiev’s third sonata symbolises my precision and inner fire, Scarlatti ‘s sonatas are an embodiment of a favourite thought of mine by Clare Boothe Luce – “… the height of sophistication is simplicity.” – and Weinberg’s piano trio reflects my appreciation towards innovativeness, eccentricity and bending borders to your whim but not breaking them – just creating your own ones while adapting but in the meanwhile simultaneously creating.

I want to thank specially to my family, teachers, friends and basically everyone for supporting me in my journey as well as to more specifically Tsveta and Emma for playing with me as well as to Paul and Nata for everything they have done for me! I wish you a pleasant listening experience!

Pianist Nikolay Dimitrov brought the audience from the Netherlands and Germany to their feet, filling the hall of the Atlas Theater in the Dutch city of Emmen. The 21-year-old graduate of the Prince Claus Conservatory in Groningen has been selected to perform as a soloist in the official performance of the Hanze Symphony Orchestra, a joint orchestral project of the Prince Claus Conservatory and the University of the Arts Bremen, conducted by Stefan Veselka.

Nikolay Dimitrov brilliantly performed the Second Piano Concerto by Sergei Rachmaninov in honor of the 150th anniversary of the composer’s birth.
